For Lily, from Dad 💛

You're doing great. Here's a wee boost for this term. You've got this!

Health & Social Care study tips · Fife College Intermediate Certificate (SCQF 5)

Tips are based on SQA's own documents for the Care and Mental Health units at this level. Every college runs things a bit differently, so if anything here doesn't match what your lecturer says, go with your lecturer.

How you'll be assessed

College courses like yours usually use coursework, reports and short class assessments rather than one big exam at the end. Check with your lecturer exactly how each of your units is assessed and when things are due, then pop the dates in your phone calendar.

📝 Coursework and reports

1. Plan it first

Break each piece into small tasks with dates (research, first draft, check, hand in). A short plan stops the last-minute panic.

2. Keep a weekly log

Jot down every week what you did, what's next and any problems. If your lecturer asks for a log book, this is it, and it makes the evaluation much easier to write.

3. Link theory to real examples

Marks come from using what you've learned, not just repeating it. After each idea, show how it applies to a real person, service or placement situation.

4. The four features of a positive care environment

This comes up a lot in Care work. Name each feature, say what it means, then explain how it meets your person's needs.

Organisational
How the service is run, e.g. policies, staffing, training, care planning.
Physical
The building and space, e.g. access, layout, safety, comfort.
Therapeutic / interpersonal
Relationships and communication, e.g. kind, respectful staff, activities that help wellbeing.
Community
Links outside, e.g. family, friends, local groups and services.

5. Evaluation: look back and look ahead

Say what went well, what you'd do differently, and how you'll use what you've learned in future (on placement, in a care job, or on your next course). Vague evaluations lose marks.

6. Own words, word count, anonymity

✍️ Answering questions in assignments and assessments

Do exactly what the command word asks.

WordWhat to doExample
IdentifyName it. A short point."Retirement."
DescribeSay what it is or what it's like, with detail."Stereotyping is a fixed belief that everyone in a group is the same, such as thinking all older people are confused."
ExplainGive the reason or the effect. Use "because…" or "this means…"."Labelling a resident as difficult can lower their self-esteem, because they start to see themselves that way."

🧠 Mental health

SQA's level 5 mental health unit (Understanding Mental Health Issues) covers what mental health and wellbeing mean, a range of mental health issues, and the role of the brain. Your college may use a slightly different version, so check your unit outline.

Key ideas to be able to explain

Looking after yourself counts too. If college ever feels like too much, talk to your lecturer, student support, or someone you trust.

⚠️ Often-tricky topics

SQA's own reports say these catch lots of Care students out, so they're worth a bit of extra revision:

The five principles of the Standards: Dignity and respect · Compassion · Be included · Responsive care and support · Wellbeing.
